Compare the real options
Explore university-managed accommodation, purpose-built student housing and private rentals. Look at room type, shared facilities, meal arrangements and study space. Think about the daily routine you want, including quiet hours, social life and access to campus, rather than judging only the photographs.
Calculate the full weekly cost
Rent is only one part of the housing budget. Ask which utilities, internet and furnishings are included and what deposits or advance payments are required. Add the cost and time of commuting. A lower advertised rent can become less attractive once transport and setup expenses are included.
Read the contract before paying
Check the start and end dates, cancellation terms, house rules and responsibility for damage or bills. Understand what happens if travel or study plans change. Seek help from the institution's housing service or an appropriate local adviser if a term is unclear; do not rely on a verbal promise that contradicts the contract.
Verify the property and payment route
Use official housing channels where possible and verify the landlord or operator independently. Be careful with pressure to pay immediately, unusually cheap listings or requests to transfer money before basic checks. Keep copies of the listing, agreement, receipts and messages.
Plan a calm arrival
Confirm check-in hours, keys and how to reach the property from the airport. If long-term housing is not ready, arrange verified temporary accommodation. Record the condition of the room when you move in and learn how to report maintenance issues. Keep a small reserve for essential household items.
